Make a Tapa Square in the Oceanic Art Gallery

Hamilton Building, Level 3

Pick up a square of mulberry fiber paper and use Samoan upeti pattern boards to create a design inspired by nature and the exhibition Printed and Painted: The Art of Bark Cloth.

El Anatsui Workshop

Hamilton Building, Level 4

Explore the process of artist El Anatsui, who used bottle tops connected with wire to create the flexible artwork Rain Has No Father?. Using cut-up boxes and metallic twist ties, assemble your own fabric, then add to a collaborative wall.

Creative Crossroads Creative Corner

North Building, Level 4

Discover the creative explosion of colonial South America that merged the influences of Europe, Asia, and indigenous artists. Create a folded paper treasure box inspired by a Columbian treasure chest, and emboss it with mix-and-match motifs from three nearby objects with designs from different cultures.

Southwest Saints Creative Corner

North Building, Level 4

Play with miniature mannequins and clothing that mimic those on the santos in the surrounding gallery to explore the art of santeros in Mexico and the southwestern United States.

Discovery Library—European & American Art

North Building, Level 6

Fashioned after the many cabinets of curiosities housed among princely palaces that originated throughout Europe during the 1500s, the Bernadette Berger Discovery Library features books, games, and other hands-on activities for the entire family to explore.
•Piece together a portrait using everyday objects like Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who imaginatively painted fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and other objects into the shapes of faces. See his paintings Summer and Autumn for inspiration.
•Dress up in costumes and experience how it feels to wear the different pieces of clothing and accessories similar to those worn by people featured in nearby paintings.

Bosch Puppet Theatre

North Building, Level 6

Delight in the fantastic creations found in a painting by a Follower of Hieronymus Bosch. Then, build puppets inspired by the painting and act out stories on the puppet theatre stage.

Looking West Creative Corner

North Building, Level 7

Harnessing the essence of the western landscape, explore layering skies and panoramas from the paintings in the Western American Art galleries. Mix and match transparencies, which are printed with foregrounds and backgrounds of paintings, to replicate works you may have seen in the galleries or create one from your own imagination.

Discovery Library—Western American Art

North Building, Level 7
•Dress up in costumes and experience how it feels to wear the different pieces of clothing and accessories similar to those worn by people featured in nearby paintings.
•Follow clues to explore the American west, cozy up with a book, and find more fun things to do throughout the Discovery Library.
