Dear Don:
I’m starting a new business and don’t have a lot of money right now. It’s just me, so I don’t need to protect anyone else, but I do want to protect my home and my family. What can I do safely by myself while I’m getting the business off the ground?

Every year, thousands of people lose money to telephone scams — from a few dollars to their life savings. Scammers will say anything to cheat people out of money. Some seem very friendly — calling you by your first name, making small talk, and asking about your family. They may claim to work for a company you trust, or they may send mail or place ads to convince you to call them. If you get a call from someone you don’t know who is trying to sell you something you hadn’t planned to buy, say “No thanks.” And, if they pressure you about giving up personal information — like your credit card or Social Security number — it’s likely a scam. Hang up and report it to the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint.

For the kid who lives inside of you.
Whether or not you are Star Wars fan, I thought the cinematic process was amazing. I waited until son # came home, while on winter break, to see the movie. We went last night, along with my brother and his daughter and son, to see it at The Continental Theatre. I don’t advise seeing the movie from the 3rd row, which we did. You can’t get the full effect of the movie from that point of view. I should have moved.

Two old but excitable miners rejoice at the prospect of future riches, even as their daily grind is full of hardship and ill-health. One, enjoying a smoke from his pipe, holds a gold nugget, too small to see, while regaling the other with tales of the many near misses of his long mining career. The Nutcracker Ballet is a warm holiday tradition enjoyed by families every year, and mine is no exception. I went to opening day matinee with my oldest granddaughter Amanda, 29, my daughter Kathleen who lives here and her little girl, my youngest grandie Leona, a kindergartener at University Park School. Here’s how each generation reacted to Colorado Ballet’s 56th performance of the beloved classic.
I had the incredible honor of interviewing Len Estrin, who currently is a volunteer at the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum. Len was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 during World War II with the rank of Corporal/Staff Sergeant.
Fearful of regulations and expensive penalties, banking is backing away from traditional mortgages.
According to Inside Mortgage Finance, banks loaned less than half of all mortgage dollars in the third quarter of 2016. This is the first time in 30 years that banks and credit unions have not taken the lead in mortgage lending.
Traditional banks have shied away from making mortgages insured by the Federal Housing Administration. This follows a series of costly lawsuits brought by the federal government surrounding these loans in the last few years, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Non-bank lenders, such as Quicken Loans, have stepped into the market snapping up borrowers with less than pristine credit.
Meanwhile, banks have concentrated on jumbo loans (those more than $417,000 in most parts of the country) because they are considered less risky both financially and legally, according to The Wall Street Journal.
In the United States, sleep deprivation is now considered a public health epidemic. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate that 50 million to 70 million people are affected by disorders of sleep or wakefulness. When a person gets less sleep than he or she needs, over time, that deprivation builds up and can cause serious problems. [Read more…]
